Hematite is a heavy and relatively hard oxide mineral which is abundantly found on earth's surface particularly in sedimentary, metamorphic and igneous rocks and in the shallow crust at locations throughout the world. It is an iron oxide with a chemical composition (Fe₂O₃) that constitutes the most important iron ore because of its high iron content (70 percent). Hematite crystallizes in the rhombohedral system, and it has the same crystal structure as ilmenite and corundum. Hematite and ilmenite form a complete solid solution at temperatures above 950 °C.
Hematite rocks are transformed to fine ground powder (200 Mesh) form to make it suitable product for oil drilling application. The Hematite ore used as a weighing agent in drilling fluids has a mica-like crystal structure ground to a practice size suitable for use in drilling fluids. Higher density Hematite occupies less space, which allows more room for water, thereby reducing the interaction between solids. Hematite is used to obtain mud weights in excess of 20.0ppg in water based drilling fluids, 19.0ppg in oil based drilling fluids, or any time that exceptional control is required of solids percentage for rheology control. Since Hematite has a specific gravity greater than the density of Barite, it is preferred over Barite to dig deeper wells and also known to perform better than Barite. For a given mud weight, a system weighted with Hematite will contain fewer solids by volume. A lower solids concentration will contribute to improved rheological properties, improved penetration rate and decreased overall mud costs.
